No. 1 Mighty Oaks Defeat No. 5 Northampton, Stay Perfect at 20–0
Bethlehem, PA. - The Salem Community College men's basketball team delivered another statement performance on Wednesday night, defeating No. 5-ranked Northampton Community College, 99–84, in a marquee Region 19 showdown between two of the nation's elite programs.
Entering the matchup as the top-ranked team in the NJCAA, the Salem Mighty Oaks faced a stiff test against the fifth-ranked Spartans. Salem rose to the challenge, using a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive effort to control the game and remain undefeated on the season.
Saaid Lee led the way for the Mighty Oaks with a team-high 20 points, adding eight rebounds and four assists while shooting efficiently from the field and the free-throw line. Nasseem Wright stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five combined steals and blocks, providing energy on both ends of the floor. Jarrell Little chipped in 14 points, while Stefan Phillips added 13 points off an efficient shooting night. Zyaire Gibson contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, rounding out a strong showing from the starting five.
Salem's depth also played a key role in the victory. Nayeem Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Idris Rines added 10 points and four rebounds. The Mighty Oaks' ability to get contributions throughout the lineup helped keep pressure on Northampton for all 40 minutes.
With the 99–84 win, Salem improves to 20–0 on the season, further cementing its position as the No. 1 team in the nation and continuing an impressive run through Region 19 competition.
Up next, the Mighty Oaks will return home to host Region 19 opponent Passaic County Community College on Saturday, January 17, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
